The
path to recovery or even
improvement of depression or low self esteem can seem impossible when
you are at the bottom of the pit. A therapist is sometimes out of the
question because of the cost of therapy, past failure with therapists
or even the distance to a therapist qualified to deal with the
problems you face. A self-guided workshop or program can be the
answer.
A major problem with people suffering from depression is the inability to act, to do something, anything, about the problem. If you are overcome by depression, the one act that will help you to improve is guided self-help through a pre-packaged program which are available on the internet.
What a pre-packaged program provides is a "canned" approach to basic improvement. You may be asking yourself how that will help YOU when your problems are so deep and impenetrable. The answer is because there are fundamental actions that will improve your condition regardless of the details even if your problems stem from deeply traumatic situations such as the loss of a loved one or depression over many years.
The most important action you must do is to begin. Simply begin. Purchase a package that appeals to you or fits into your budget and simply start. And begin your positive approach by making your first goal to read or listen to only ONE article or ONE CD or listen to only ONE recording. You don't have to complete the entire program. At least not to start.
The "trick" is to create a goal than you know you can achieve. Something simply. One step. One activity. Just one. Because when that one task is completed, you will have one solid tool in your arsenal to get you through task number two where you will improve even more and be ready to forge ahead.
Depression and low self esteem travel hand-in-hand and a program for one will serve the other. Guided programs for either condition will start you on a path of improved self discipline and begin your education of self-talk and self-hypnosis.
Each program approaches problems in somewhat differing methods. Some use subliminal messages through listening. Others use self-talk and others direct you immediately to self hypnosis. The technique is important only is your preference of delivery. In most cases, every program uses each technique at some point.
Using auditory messages or listening to mp3s is frequently the best and easiest method for a person starting their first package because you don't have to do anything except listen. This is easy to do. If you are like me, I found this the easiest method because I had a difficult time sleeping but had no energy to do anything else so putting on the earphones while lying in bed was a no-demand activity. I was at the point of "Why not? I can't do anything anyway." And it helped. The technique didn't bring me from a lowly, worthless wretch of a person to being Mr. Wonderful, but it helped. And that little bit of help let me start building a ladder, a step at a time, out of the pit.
It may be deep, deep down but you know you are still fighting to be more than you are. Do this one act -- get on a program -- just one action because you need that first step to feeling better and being more.
