Hypnosis
is the focusing of thought. If you have ever been so engrossed in
something that time has gotten away from you, you don't hear the
doorbell or someone had to get your attention by poking you, you have
experienced at least some degree of self-hypnosis. This act
of mental focusing connects more directly with our subconscious,
blocking out those thoughts that keep telling that we can't do
something. Research shows that hypnosis, rather than being a
state of sleep, is actually a state of high mental awareness and
focused attention. With guidance, what self-hypnosis will do for you is
to focus your mental attention on the resolution of a problem whether
the problem be personal enhancement (self-confidence and self esteem),
better physical ability (being a better golfer or tennis player) or any
other topic which interests you.
Does hypnosis work? By using brain imaging, scientist know that hypnosis not only works, but through the brain imaging are able to see the actual process and results of hypnosis.
Memory, pain perception and voluntary movement are directly impacted through hypnosis. Hypnosis enhanced the activation of the precuneus, a region of the brain involved in memory and self imagery. Hypnosis helps reconfigure control mediated by the frontal lobes of the brain.
So, although there are scientific questions about exactly how hypnosis works, there is no question that it does work and which areas of the brain are affected.
Most top athletes use 'visualization' to perfect their skills. Visualization is mentally playing the game, sweeping through the backstroke, fixing that slice in golf, rushing through to the goal line, slamming the puck past the goalie ... visualizing the act and mentally feeling the action. Research in the area of visualization shows that all the muscles that would be used in the actions being visualized are actually put into play. Visualization is a form of self-hypnosis. Visualizing yourself making that tough sale, meeting the girl (or guy) of your dreams, being smooth and in control, are all visualizations. Self-hypnosis is the tool of visualization.

Post-hypnotic
suggestion is real but it will never make anyone do something they
wouldn't do on their own. Have you ever pretended to be a chicken?
Maybe. Probably only when you are home alone and goofing off. Or in
front of your children for fun. If you ever did pretend to be a
chicken, you were in known surroundings and comfortable. Remember that
hypnosis focuses your attention on one thing and tends to make the rest
of the world disappear. So would you be pretend to be a chicken under
hypnosis? Probably yes. And if you pretended to be a chicken
while on stage at the Hollywood Bowl would you be embarrassed?
Probably yes, but only because you did it in public and not
in the comfort of your living room. Would you pee while on-stage at the
Hollywood Bowl? No more than you would pee on your living room
carpet.
Self-hypnosis is a form of meditation. In meditation for relaxation, a person visualizes a peaceful place and pleasant circumstances which relaxes them. Meditation for relaxation is used widely for people to lower their own blood pressure which brings better health to the individual. Hypnosis for self improvement is simply meditation used for a different goal. No matter what your age or physical condition, hypnosis, once learned, can be used every day in any place to help improve your health, your personal self-worth, your business or your golf game. Hypnosis is a very valuable tool indeed.
Hypnosis helps one to communicate with your entire self to bring about a more balanced and successful life. Self-hypnosis does not dissolve a problem but rather provides an individual the tools to manage the problem and to work around it.
