Depression
has many facets and usually goes hand-in-hand with low self esteem. In
my opinion, (and I am not a medical professional just a person who has
suffered from varying degrees of depression from long-term, deep
depression to just having the blues for couple of days), there are
several things you need to check before you begin a course for
depression or even medication for depression. Check these
things :
1.
Depression can be caused from light deprivation and/or a
vitamin
D deficiency. I didn't know I suffered from light deprivation until
about 10 years ago. The way I found out was that I was working long
hours in an office with no windows. I got very depressed. It wasn't the
kind of depression that a person gets just from being overworked. I
went to my doctor and, bless his heart, he suggested I try a sunlight
lamp. I bought a Gro-Lux (t) lamp and used in my office. In about 3
days I was feeling pretty much normal. Now that I'm aware that I suffer
from light deprivation I make sure I get a lot of sunlight and that I
take my vitamin D every day. Vitamin D, by the way, is acquired only
one of 2 ways: Through direct contact of sunlight on your skin and
through vitamin D enhanced dairy products.
2.
Get a thorough physical. Not feeling well, having pain and
being
under a great deal of stress are very common causes of depression.
3.
Try to get more exercise anyway you can. Exercise creates
endorphins that are natural mood elevators. This is probably one of the
reasons that people get addicted to running or to working out at the
gym everyday.
4. Being overweight frequently
causes depression for 2 reasons: #1 you don't feel well. #2 your self
esteem is shot and you feel that you don't look good either. Both of
these reasons are very common causes of depression. Obviously, the
resolution is to lose some weight and to feel better about yourself.
